培根（1561—1626），英国文艺复兴时期的政治家、散文家、科学家、哲学家。他是古典经验论和科学归纳法的创始人，同时又是将科学研究程序进行逻辑组织化的先驱者。他是第一个批判经院哲学并反对亚里士多德逻辑体系的哲学家，他所撰写的《新工具》等一系列科学哲学巨著试图构建起以观察和归纳为前提的系统化自然科学方法，为现代科学发展奠定了方法论基础。
