内容介绍
In Justin Yifu Lin's legendary life, there have been several important turning points, each of which has not only changed the course of his life dramatically, but also enriched his knowledge and broadened his minds and professional horizons. Lin dropped out of university to study of a military college in Taiwan 40 years before. Just as everything in his life seemed to be as perfect as it could be, he took a huge risk swimming across the Taiwan Strait to the mainland. Afterwards he studied at Peking University, the University of Chicago, and Yale University. After coming back to China as an overseas returnee, he spent decades with a swimming athlete's tenacity working on the Three Rural Issues and promoting the New Countryside Movement in China. In 2008, at the age of 56, Lin became Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank and continued to put into practice his dream of "serving the wellbeing of people all over the world".

  《新时代的中国人:传奇学人林毅夫(英)》:
Great opportunities always come to those who are prepared. This saying cannot be more appropriate for just in Yifu Lin who has been a constant soldier fighting for his dreams.
During his study of Marxist Political Economics at the Department of Economics in Peking University, Lin stood out among his fellow classmates for his obvious intelligence and brilliance. He was not only quite familiar with Western economic theories, but also had a very good command of English, speaking it very fluently These personal advantages soon brought just in Lin an opportunity to rise above the rock
In 1980, a distinguished guest visited China when reform and opening up just took place. Born in 1903, Theodore W. Schultz, an honorable professor at the University of Chicago and the 1977 Nobel Prize winner for Economics, who was renowned for developing the theory of agricultural economics and pioneering the research of human capital, had achieved a lot of breakthroughs in economic studies. Back in 1977 when he was granted the Nobel Prize, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences wrote in the congratulatory letter to him, "Most of the people in the world are poor, so if we knew the economics of being poor, we would know much of the economics that really matters. Most of the world's poor people eam their living from agriculture, so if we knew the economics of agriculture, we would know much of the economics of being poor." As one of the top economists specializing in economic research on developing countries, Schultz came to China, the largest developing country in the world, to conduct research and give lectures the following year after he was awarded the Nobel Prize.
Peking University, best of the best universities in China, was naturally Schultz's first choice to give lectures. Established in 1912 as the earliest department of economics in China's universities, Peking University's Department of Economics has been the most important economics research center in China.
It was the second year of the reform and opening up, and professional intellectuals were rare in every field in China. It took much effort for Peking University leaders, including Professor Dong Wenjun, to find a good interpreter for Professor Schultz. At first, they assigned the task to a graduate student from Beijing Institute of Foreign languages, but he couldn't interpret technical terms well because he knew little about economics and even less about Western economics. Apparently this task required a person well versed in both English and Western economics. The name of Yifu Lin immediately popped up in Professor Dong Wenjun's mind. So he let Lin give it a shot.
