　　1.Soil Erosion Prediction Research The universal soil loss equation， which is the most important soil erosion prediction model， is used in India to assess soil e-rosion.2.Basic Research on Soil Erosion Measures for farming to prevent soil erosion play a very im-portant role in India.They have been widely used， especially in the management of small watershed areas.Therefore， the benefits of different measures of water and soil conservation，the implementation criteria and erosion response factors in In-dia are also some of the focuses of their research.3.Soil Erosion Control Decision-making Study Comprehensive management of soil and water conservation for small watershed areas is an important research path in Indi-a.The country is in the process of implementing a development plan for a series of river basins.This is the result of the soil and water conservation measures that are taken， as well as of giving graded priority to watershed management decision mak-ing.There are many studies on this aspect as well.4.Soil and water conservation measuresSivanappan （1995） summarized the soil and water conserva-tion techniques implemented in the drylands of India and their ~impacts.Those Agronomic measures include contour farm-ing/contour strips， strip cropping， forming terraces， cover crops， cropping systems and rotation， off- season tillage in alfisols （light red soils） ， deep tillage in hard pan areas， use of fertilizer， summer fallow， mulching to reduce evapora-tion， providing a vegetative barrier on contours on the land but also in small gullies， providing vertical mulching， sur-face mulching， and sowing in furrows.The engineering measures include contour trenching， contour stone walls，staggered trenching， constructing temporary and permanent check dams， gully plugging， contour bunding， compart-mental bunding， land levelling， among others.Soil and wa-ter management is based on two fundamental principles：maintaining a sufficiently high rate of infiltration； dispos-al of excess runoff water without consequential erosion.
