An Amazing Trip to Beijing

As the pace of life accelerates today, people are always busy and feel there is never enough time. Perhaps the words that children hear most from their parents are: “Hurry, hurry, we’re going to be late.” No kids like hearing such words, and they prefer a more relaxed childhood. This book facilitates focus on a special reading experience for families. It brings readers to Beijing, one of the most wonderful cities in the world, for a tour. It enables readers to explore the secrets of the ancient capital and visit its old lanes, the Forbidden City, the world’s largest city square, the Temple of Heaven and others, just like Maroussia, a Russian girl who opened the door of a magic cupboard. The kind dragons, phoenixes, Divine Tortoise and the elephant that Maroussia and her friends met along their trip recount many ancient legends and interesting stories about Beijing. Through the eyes of the little girl, readers may have fun and get to know friends in the city.

In terms of its contents and expression as well as from the perspective of its target readers, the book is for home reading. My granddaughter motivated me to write this book. She always has infinite questions. Full of curiosity, she seems to open magic cupboards all the time and can’t wait to see everything in this boundless world.

This book was illustrated by Elena Yaremenko Liu. She was fated to marry Liu Xuan (grandson of Li Sha) and start a family combining Chinese and Russian cultures. In the 1930s, a Russian girl named Elizabetha Pavlovna Kishkina (known as Li Sha in China) married Chinese revolutionary Li Lisan. The couple lived in Moscow before moving to China. Li Sha not only gave birth to two daughters, but also cultivated a number of Russian language experts for China, who affectionately called her “Mama Li Sha.” All of the third generation of the family can speak both Chinese and Russian fluently. Since Elena joined this extraordinary family, she has lived in China for many years. She often holds painting exhibitions and teaches fine arts. She also illustrates books.
