哲学并没有定义，并没有人能解答哲学是什么。哲学是一种特殊的思维运动，是对绝对的追求，哲学是解答难题中的难题的学问，哲学所面对的问题并没有正确答案，甚至可能永远也找不出答案。它是一门学问，是价值观，是思想，是方法，是对基本原则进行的理性重建，是惊奇的人对真理的不断寻求一这些人可能来自各个行当，可能是诗人、作家，比如卢梭、拜伦；可能是冲锋陷阵的军事家，比如亚历山大大帝、拿破仑；也可能只是一名授业解惑的教师，比如本书作者弗兰克·梯利。他们在学术上也许完全不是哲学家，但是他们却如此深远地影响了哲学思潮的气质，以致于如果忽略了他们，我们就很难真正理解哲学的发展。哲学，就是这样一门学问，带着仰望天空的人类求知的本性，逐步前行，逐渐令万物脱去种种俗世的遮蔽，而将本真展现出来，由此，把自己展现为一种真正解放性的力量。 《西方哲学史（原著注释版）（英文版）》是一部讲述西方哲学发展历程的著作，其雏形为弗兰克·梯利教授在大学任教时的讲义。
