本图集以地球科学系统科学和板块理论等现代地学理论为指导，以数十年来累积的实测数据和研究成果为基础，结合收集海域及邻近陆地各类地质资料，运用当代先进的编图方法和成图技术编制而成。内容包括南海及邻区地形地貌、南海及邻区晚第四纪地质及其资源环境效应、南海及邻区地层与沉积特征、南海及邻区地球物理场特征与深部构造、南海及邻区地质构造特征及其演化五大部分。 图集所展示的大量实测数据及其成果认识，提升了南海及邻区海洋地质调查的集成创新水平，将为维护我国海洋权益、资源勘查、军事海防、涉海工程建设、减灾防灾和海洋经济可持续发展提供重要的基础资料和科学依据，为实现我国海洋强国战略提供支撑。
