《艺术哲学核心术语》:
A familiar picture of the nature of the creative process is that it is a kind of EXPRESSION.The artist experiences an emotion which she is driven to express in a work of art.According to Leo Tolstoy's version of expression theory, the artist is actually experiencing the emotion while she is creating; the artist's desire to embody the emotion in paint, words, sound, and so on, leads to the emotion serving as a guide in the creative process. For Tolstoy, the ultimate goal is communication; it is a central part of his theory that the same emotion be aroused in spectators.Tolstoy's critics have pointed out that when an artist puts pen to paper,to express in a work of art an extreme emotion such as misery, it is unlikely that she is actually miserable while carrying out the complex work involved in writing a novel or composing music. It is more likely,as Suzanne Langer (1895—1985) suggests, that artists imagine an emotion (drawing upon their knowledge of emotions), which then governs their various decisions (see DANCE).
