“外国人在中国”系列丛书取材于央视4 套《外国人在中国》栏目。该栏目是中央电视台中文国际频道（CCTV-4）于2013 年2 月25 日起推出的以外国人为主体的纪实性专题节目。书中纪录了外国人在中国的学习、工作和生活，生动地反映中国丰富多彩的传统文化，也折射出当代中国的发展变化和开放包容的文化氛围。书中的人物与故事为中外文化交流搭建起一座桥梁。
“Foreigner in China”Series takes material from the feature program “Foreigners in China” of CCTV 4. This program was firstly aired in February 25, 2013, and it’s the first documentary program focused on how foreigners learn, work and live in China. The book series reflects not only Chinese traditional culture and inclusively open atmosphere, but also exhibits the development and tremendous changes taken place in contemporary China. The main characters and their stories in these books have been acting as a bridge of cultural exchange between China and other countries.

Each international family is definitely unique. The joys and sorrows of life are unavoidably related to their culture backgrounds. Then how do they react to all these?

Home in Suzhou
“A tender kiss... Sorry. You ask me how deeply I love you. I love you...I sounded off to high. Sorry. Our deep affection... This is the bit I’ve got to work a little bit harder on.” This foreigner is called John Johnson and now he is practicing singing a Chinese song while playing the guitar. Recently, John has been enthusiastically practicing this song in preparation for the “Home in Suzhou” foreigners’ talent show in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. He will be a special guest on the show that will back up the other contestants. He is placing a lot of importance on this performance. For this performance, John has been practicing for over three weeks. John says: “There’re going to be quite a few people there and there’s going to be TV and cameras and this makes it a little bit more important, while to be honest normally when you just sing in front of people, it makes you feel more nervous, rather than just singing the song yourself.”
John was born in Hartlepool in the northeast of England. In 1994, he went on holiday to Abu Dhabi, and met a Chinese girl called Tang Chongyan who was working there. Even though it was just a once off encounter, Tang left him with a profound impression. John says: “The first time I met Annie (Tang’s English name) I felt this lady was different from other ladies that I’d met. She was very confident. And I could tell she had high self-esteem. I was interested immediately.” This very favorable impression led John to start actively pursuing this unique Chinese lady. Tang says: “It was like a true English gentleman had appeared before me. The way he spoke. Three phone calls every day. He would never miss one. Those three calls became a sort of habit. If they didn’t come one day, I’d be like, that’s weird, how come he hasn’t called. So he used this method to get a hold of my heart.” After two long years of courting, John finally won Tang’s heart. They got together and had a beautiful son and daughter. They now live in Suzhou.
