华中科技大学外国语学院始建于1953年，经历了由俄文教研组、英语教研室、英语系到包括英语、日语、德语、翻译、法语等专业以及大学外语系多语种、多学科的发展历程。学院设有“中外语言文化比较研究”二级学科博士学位授权点，拥有外国语言文学一级学科硕士学位授权点，外国语言学及应用语言学、英语语言文学、日语语言文学和德语语言文学等四个二级学科硕士学位授权点以及翻译硕士专业学位授权点。“外国语言文学”为湖北省省级重点学科。
