简•奥斯丁（Jane Austen，1775-1817），英国小说家。生于乡村小镇斯蒂文顿，父亲是当地教区牧师。奥斯丁没上过正规学校，在父母指导下，她阅读了大量文学作品。20岁左右，奥斯丁开始写作，共发表了6部长篇小说。
奥斯丁终身未婚，由于她住在乡村小镇，生活环境恬静、舒适，因此她的作品里没有重大的社会矛盾。主要描绘她在狭小生活圈子里熟悉的中产阶级家庭生活、青年男女的恋爱婚姻等。她以女性特有的细致入微的观察力，真实地描绘了她周围的小天地，尤其是绅士淑女间的婚姻和爱情。她的作品格调轻松诙谐，富有喜剧性冲突，深受读者欢迎。
